A few years ago, we started focusing on Eco friendly fabrics like recycled polyester fabric. The journey has been challenging because yarn suppliers have very high minimum order quantities (MOQ). For example a typical MOQ for yarn is 5,000 kg. This quantity will make around 15,000 meters of fabric. Is it too much for you? If yes, don’t worry, we have a solution. We have available stock of Eco yarns in our sister company www.greenyarn.vn to accommodate small orders. Contact us for more details about recycled polyester fabric by the meter in Vietnam.

What is recycled polyester?

In the fashion industry, polyester is any fabric or textile which is made using polyester yarns and fibers. Polyester is the shortened name for polyethylene terephthalate (PET). It is a synthetic polymer that is man-made from petroleum and a non-renewable resource. Basically, polyester is plastic. Its production is energy-demanding. The processing of heavy chemicals cause a lot of toxic waste which can damage soil, water and air irreversibly.

Recycled polyester is made from existing plastics like old water bottles instead of virgin polyester (i.e. petroleum).

Plastic pollution is one of the biggest challenges of the 21st century. Giving a second life to used plastic waste and preventing it from ending in landfill or the ocean is a great step to overcoming the pollution issue.

How is plastic recycled into polyester?

Recycled polyester starts by sterilizing, drying and breaking down the collected plastic into small, thin chips. The chips are heated and pushed through a spinneret to form strings of yarn. The threads are heated, combined, and shredded again. The result is a fluffy material which is the raw substance that is needed to make polyester. The fibers are brushed together so they all lie in a similar direction to strengthen the material. The remaining sheet of polyester is spun onto bobbins and ready to be woven into cloth.

Sustainability

By limiting the use of virgin materials to make polyester, its recycled counterpart lowers its environmental impact both upstream and downstream […] regular polyester.

Recycled polyester reduces the use of virgin petroleum and decreases greenhouse gas emissions from creating and processing virgin polyester. By diverting used plastics from landfill, recycling polyester prevents the waste from ending in the oceans and harming marine life.

One of the sustainability advantages of recycled polyester is that it can be continuously recycled without its quality degrading.
