After 25 to 30 days of eating, it is time to metamorphose into a moth. The silkworms start releasing a silk filament from their body to spin a cocoon to protect themselves during the transformation.
The silk must be collected before the silkworms finish transforming and break out of the silk cocoon. It takes about a week for silkworms to build their cocoon and metamorphose. When the cocoons are completed, the silk is extracted by plunging the cocoons into boiling water to dissolve the gum that holds it together. The chrysalis — the middle stage of a butterfly’s metamorphosis — is killed in the cocoon. It takes about 15 cocoons to obtain 1 gram of raw silk. The silk thread can measure from 500 to 1500 meters.
The last step is weaving. Skilled craftsmen interlace 5 to 10 sets of threads around each other on wooden looms to create distinctive patterns and silk fabric for tailoring.
To give the fabric its colors, dyes are applied either to raw or spun silk, or to finished woven fabrics. Silk can naturally have different colors depending on the temperature to which it is heated. The heating can be done while the silk is yarn or fabric. Silk can be shades of green and yellow without any dyeing.
