Following is a list of sustainable fabrics for sale in Vietnam. First let’s breakdown the hierarchy of all fabric types. How are fabrics categorized? Keep in mind that fabrics are made from yarn and yarn is made from fiber so we will use the term fiber instead of fabric. At the top of the hierarchy we have two main groups of fibers. Natural or manufactured fibers.

Natural Fibers

    • -Plant based fibers:
Examples are cotton, bamboo*, hemp* and flax*. The asterix (*) indicates that they are mechanically produced and consequently have a very rough hand-feel.
All of these plant based fibers are made from cellulose.

  • -Animal based fibers:
Examples are wool from sheep, silk from silkworm and cashmere from goats.
All of these animal based fibers are made from protein.

Manufactured Fibers

    • -Synthetic
Examples are polyester, nylon, acetate and spandex.
All of these synthetic manufactured fibers are made from polymers which are long repeating chains for molecules. The raw material is petroleum. The most common polymer is called polyethylene terephthalate (PET).

  • -Regenerated Fibers
Examples are milk, viscose, rayon, Tencel, Modal and “Bamboo”
Bamboo is in quotes because regenerated Bamboo is not the mechanical bamboo mentioned above.
This category of fibers is best understood by imagining a big pot of chemical soup. If you put either plant fibers or animal fibers in the chemical soup the fibers get soft. In other words, if you put rough bamboo fiber into the chemical soup then the bamboo fiber softens up. If you put dried milk into the chemical soup then the milk forms soft fibers.
  • There are two types of regenerated fibers.
Regenerated cellulosic fibers (plant based like bamboo, wood, coconut shell, banana stems, etc)
Regenerated protein fibers (protein based like milk
