2020 has been a tough year for Vietnam as several environmental disasters damaged many people’s lives and properties. In particular, the Central region witnessed some of Vietnam’s “most severe floods in decades”. In order to neutralize impacts of natural disasters and respond to climate change, it is becoming more urgent than ever to increase forest coverage and quality. Such an effort requires the participation and cooperation of all levels, from government to businesses and agencies to individuals. Gaia Nature Conservation joined the force by organizing activities to “connect resources for planting more forests trees”. including the Greener Vietnam Program, a trip to the forest which took place on January 22, 2021 in Dong Nai World Biosphere Reserve.

Who was the event organized by?

The event was organized by Gaia, a nature conservation organization in Vietnam. The organization was founded thanks to a dedicated group of conservationists led by Mrs. Do This Thanh Huyen. With more than 20 years of experience working alongside international nature conservation organizations, Mrs. Huyen has passion in her heart to protect the environment.

Where did they go?

The one-day trip took place in Dong Nai World Biosphere Reserve, which is part of the UNESCO world heritage.  Dong Nai is a province in the south-east of Vietnam, 60 kms north-east of Ho Chi Minh City.

How many people were there?

Some +30 business people from various companies joined the trip this January 22nd.

What was the purpose of the trip?

The purpose of the trip was to educate people about preserving forests and their challenges, the how to protect them and how to expand them – or afforestation. The aim was also for the people to understand how sustaining the forest creates values not only for the environment and the people, but also for their businesses.

What did they do?

During the one-day journey in this forest, the participants visited afforestation projects and learned about a sustained forest plantation project. They also discussed the benefits of sustainable plantation beyond the forest itself. Businesses also explored and experienced the typical dry rainforest that is habitats of one of the remaining elephant populations in Vietnam. The day helped them to understand great values of the forest as well as its challenges. Especially, businesses also had opportunity to discuss issues related to taking social responsibility activities of enterprises, thereby finding a common direction for their own companies.

What was taken away from this trip?

The function of the forest is to conserve nature, protect ecosystems and restore plants and animals. The forest also allows the planet to breathe. Ms. Linh, who attended this trip, said the she was mesmerized by the infinite life inside the forests. “It was magical to hear the sound of the trees, the plants, the insects. The biodiversity resources of the forest is so rich.” From a business point of view, Director of the Southern Environment Admistration Mr. Tran Phong said that “the contribution of enterprises in plantation is vitally important at present as the quality of Vietnam’s forest is in critical need to be improved. The more resources we could get, the quicker we reach the target of 1 billion trees as proposed by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.”
